My Creative Process
Every creative type has some sort of system they use during the creative process. What may work for some artists may not work for others. I, for one, do all of my work watching TV and drinking coffee. There must be coffee.
I'm going to take you through my process so you can get a glimpse of what's behind the end result. For this blog my theme is going to be red, white, and black, which is one of my favorite color combinations.
Color is my inspiration for everything I make, whether it’s jewelry, art, or pottery. If I see a color scheme I like I find a way to re-create it in some way. Typically, the actual design idea doesn’t usually come to me until I’m actually sitting down about to work. I will admit that one time I saw a woman wearing a chevron-patterned maxi dress and I painted a pot with the exact same pattern and color-scheme! See, inspiration can come from anywhere!
I am a textbook night owl, so my creativity doesn’t usually kick in until nighttime. The few times I've tried to make things during the day I pretty much just sat there while my mind was completely blank. But come 8pm (or later) all of these ideas come flooding in! Go figure -_-
I’m a self-taught painter, so I chose tools that I would be the most comfortable with and I kind of just stuck with them. At some point I will look into using different kinds of brushes and tools. My style involves circular, leopard-type patterns, drip effects, and fine lines. I also have to be inspired before I create anything. There are times when I have felt like I was supposed to be doing something and forced myself to work on a project. When that happens absolutely no ideas flow and I end up feeling frustrated. There are also times when I have felt very enthusiastic about starting a project only to realize that the ideas I had in mind aren't...working. At that point I just stop what I'm doing altogether and move on to something else, completely unrelated to anything creative.
I started making jewelry with the intention of creating pieces that look like they were custom made just for my outfit. Sometimes I would create pieces to match specific outfits, and other times I would build an outfit around a particular piece of jewelry I’ve already made. I like to make jewelry that can “dress up” casual outfits. A basic top or button-up with jeans or a skirt, a colorful piece of jewelry…bam! I want the jewelry to be the focal point of the outfit. Jewelry is wearable art! I love incorporating different textural effects into my jewelry designs using unique, high-quality beads and materials. My intention is for people to wear my pieces as a means to dress up simple, chic clothing, so I need my jewelry to really stand out!
There's nothing linear about the creative process, and the way I do things one day may not work another day. I really hope you enjoyed getting a glimpse into what inspires me and perhaps you've taken away some ideas of your own. Comment below and share what inspires your passion!
